Why do people think that pushing the button more than once will make the elevator come faster or the doors close sooner?

We're so harried, it's hard to wait patiently. The impulse to not just stand there but to do something is hard to resist.

Perhaps they think that the elevator was not listening.

Pushing the elevator button more than once works as a sort of 'psychic willing': "Come to me quickly, come to me".
