The controversial annual bear hunt in NJ is on! Which leads to my annual question:
Why do people build houses in bear habitat and then get upset when bears wander the streets looking for food?

My main response is that most people are just plain awful. They don't care about anyone or anything else--and that goes for bears and just about everything else you might mention. To avoid ending on a sour note, I'd like to say that apart from that, people are great.
I forgot to say that we had a bear visit our house a couple of times while I was growing up. They liked our crabapples. Lived on block off main street. Granted, it was a town of less than 2000, but still! A bear in town was quite an ocassion.

They are the same people who keep rebuilding homes in flood zones, earthquake areas, and hurricane paths, etc., at taxpayer expense.
