Why do people paint the aluminum siding on their houses?

I must lead a sheltered life because I've never seen that either. I thought the whole point of siding was that you didn't have to paint your house. Of course, things could never be that simple.
45 years ago my father was the first person to get aluminum siding in our town.It was white as snow but after all the years of Maine hard weather it has turned a nice gray color.So if you want that white color today it will have to be painted over and maybe it will last another 45 years,But painting every 45 years sure bets doing it every other year like we use to do.
