Why do companies invariably announce layoffs right before Christmas/Hannukah when it will hurt the employees involved the most?

Companies announce them as soon as something is definite, in order to give those being let go plenty of time to find new work.

Besides, it's just your imagination that it invariably happens before Christmas. And that's because that's the only time you pay attention to it...

I disagree. I spent 25 years working in the financial industry. Companies do layoffs at the end of the year for balance sheet reasons and to raise the price of their stock for the end of the year. It's a selfish, cruel practice.

Could this be a case where the answer to the riddle lies within?
