Where does dust come from?

I would really like to know the answer to this one. My house is one of the dustiest houses I know.

I think its a punishment from the cleaning fairy. Who says all fairies are good-hearted?

Could dust be the result of minute cosmic stars hitting planet earth, shattering and dispersing? These alien matters find refuge on my furniture and floors. They come in peace, I leave them in peace!

FW is right--some of it does come from outer space. It's called "cosmic dust" and, oh, the stories it could tell...

I've heard that the majority of dust found in the average house is dead skin.
